What does the Bible say about Health?


3 John 1:2 “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.”

It is not God’s plan that we suffer disease and endure pain and suffering but, ever since sin entered the world disease has been tormenting people. But does the bible give us guidelines to healthful living? We can still eliminate diseases by following certain health principles.

The original diet given to the first human beings, Adam and Eve, in the garden of Eden was:

Genesis 1:29 “And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.”

This was a totally raw diet consisting of every herb bearing seed and the fruit of every tree yielding seed.

“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Jesus spilt His blood at Calvary to redeem us from the bonds of sin. So that, in prayer, we may come “boldly before the throne of grace” and ask forgiveness for our past sins and we will be forgiven (“1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”)

Therefore we have a solemn duty because our body Is not our own but, by creation and redemption, it belongs to God.

We should be doing all that we possible can to keep our bodies in a healthy condition.

What light have we been given in regards to he topic of Health in the Bible?

In the book of Proverbs there are three laws to good health:

Proverbs

24:13 “My son, eat thou honey, because it is good”

25:16 “Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee”

25:27 “It is not good to eat much honey”

These three laws are:

1. Eat because what you are eating is good, Only eat good food.
2. Only eat as much as you need. Be temperate.
3. Don’t eat a lot of any good food.

We also have counsel not to eat of strong drinks such as alcohol:

Proverbs 20:1 Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.

Also 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 says:

“Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,
Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.”
Drunkards and the like shall not inherit the kingdom of God unless they repent and plead forgiveness and God will cleanse, from all unrighteousness. (see the topic ‘Saving Grace’)

Finally “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31

In summary:

· It Is not God’s plan that His people should have disease.

· God’s original diet for man was herbs and fruit.

· We have been freed from sin by the blood of Jesus therefore we should glorify Him in our body which is His.

· To Give glory to God we should:

· Only eat good food

· Only eat as much as you need

· Not over eat of any good food

· Should not drink strong drink which includes fermented drink such as alcohol

· Whether eating or drinking we should “do all to the glory of God”
